Atop Mount Vernon, home of George Washington, can be seen the dove of peace weathervane selected for use on the precancelled 1974 Christmas stamp, which is the first ever issued by the United States with pressure-sensitive adhesive.
The weathervane was made in Philadelphia by Joseph Rakestraw according to the specification of Washington, and installed soon after it arrived in 1787. Washington is said to have chosen the design because he was tired of war and wanted a symbol of peace.
The dove of peace, an olive branch made of iron clasped in its beak, has a copper body with iron strips and measures 42-1/4 inches in length and 35 inches from wingtip to wingtip.
The Currier & Ives print, "Winter in the Country," echoes the "Peace on Earth" theme of this experimental stamp, which was available only in small quantities.

Otto Knirsch, one of the celebrated American artists employed by Nathaniel Currier to produce drawings on the lithography stone created the 1853 print, "The Road, Winter," from which one of the three 1974 Christmas stamps was adapted. "The Road, Winter" was produced and first sold four years before James Ives joined Currier in the partnership which would become world-famous. Popular among his employees, Currier received the original copy of this print as a surprise gift from them. So pleased was Currier with the design, which showed Currier and his wife in a sleigh, that he put it into his line. Today, it is one of the most valuable of the Currier and Ives prints, which originally sold for pennies and yet now commands hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

One of the three 1974 Christmas stamps features an angel taken from the central of the five panels making up the large altarpiece painting which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Neither the artist nor the place where the "The Perussis Altarpiece" was originally hung are known, although scholars have established that it was completed in 1480 and probably originally decorated the altarpiece of the small Carthusian Monastary of Bonpas on the banks of the Durance River south of Avignon, France.
The selection of this angel followed the tradition of issuing one stamp of religious emphasis for use on the Christmas mails. The joy of the angel, symbolic of the mood of the Christmas season, is reflected in the delight of the ice-skaters in the Currier & Ives print entitled "Central Park Winter" selected for this Christmas cachet.

The designer selected this particular subject for the 1973 "secular" design for her own controversial reasons. According to her, "People want to get back to things they can believe in . . . a Christmas tree really says Christmas more than anything else." (!)
This stamp is the first actually designed in needlepoint, although the Homemakers Issue of 1964 (Scott Number 1252) was designed so as to represent needlepoint. The designer completed the needlepoint original in just ten days.

An intimate of popes and princes, Raphael enjoyed fame and honor such as few artists have. A leading force of the High Renaissance, he created masterpieces which are serene, with portraits of even the holiest figures truly human. As shown by this stamp, he saw the Holy Child as a chubby, though holy, infant.

To honor Santa Claus, that uniquely American adaptation of the tradition of St. Nicholas. Dedicated by the Postmaster General to the "Virginia's of the world who ask 'Is there a Santa Claus?,'" it was in keeping with the spirit of Santa Claus that the first sheet of these new stamps was presented to Barbara Lee, eight-year-old granddaughter of the same Virginia O'Hanlon who had written her famous question to The New York Sun in 1897. Virginia never saw the Santa Claus stamp, for she died May 13, 1971. The Santa on this stamp was in part the vision of Henry Livingston who wrote the famous story of St. Nicholas' visit in the early 1800's.

The basis for the 1972 religious Christmas stamp is a tiny detail from an 85 x 73 inch panel painted by an unknown Flemish master known only as the Master of the St. Lucy Legend, a painting he did in 1480 in a Bruges church. Done in the rich Flemish tradition, the painting shows angels playing musical instruments, one a vielle (ancestor to the violin) and the other an oboe-type instrument, a soprano shawm. The subject of this stamp hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The title of the entire painting is Mary, Queen of Heaven.

The son of the famous artist Andrew Wyeth created this stamp which brings to life the traditional Yuletide song The Twelve Days of Christmas. It will be recalled that "On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me twelve drummers drumming; eleven pipers piping; ten lords a-leaping; nine ladies dancing; eight maids a-milking; seven swans a-swimming; six geese a-laying five golden rings; four calling birds; three French hens; two turtle doves; and a partridge in a pear tree." Like many other English ballads, this one has been enthusiastically sung by Americans since Colonial days.

The religious subject of the 1971 Christmas stamp, is a detail from Giorgione's Adoration of the Shepherds, a painting that was once the focal point of a celebrated quarrel among international art critics as to who was the artist. At one time it was thought that the artist was Bellini or Titian.
The most famous art critic of Italian art, Bernard Berenson finally came to the conclusion that Giorgione was at least the artist, in part, collaborating with Titian.
Modern experts generally attribute the painting to Giorgione. His painting is typified by a very well-defined, very human grouping of figures situated in a softly illuminated landscape (not included in the stamp), done in a style referred to as Giorgionesque.
Giorgione was one of the first to give landscape an important position, and as such, influenced such later painters as Titian, Watteau, and Manet.
All lettering on this stamp is patterened after the 1495 type face produced under the direction of the Venetian printer, Aldus Manutius.

Issued to mark the three hundred fiftieth anniversary of the Landing of the Mayflower. The significance of the landing, which was preceded by the signing at Provincetown Harbor on November 11, 1620, of the Mayflower Compact, was that it established democratic self-government in America. The Pilgrim settlement proved that men could live and prosper, even if humbly, in New England. John Carver (c. 1576-1621) was the first Governor of the Colony, and was succeeded at his death by William Bradford (1590-1657), who was reelected governor almost every year until his death, and wrote the famous record of the colony's struggles, The History of Plimoth Plantation. As these toys from the last century remind us, American children have always been indulged by their parents. The first toymakers guild was organized in the late 1830's to make playthings. Toys have always reflected the interests of society -- probably a reason why dolls for girls have always been popular, and gifts for boys have ranged from locomotives in the 1870's, to models of Lindbergh's airplane in the 1930's, to models of space stations in the 1970's. The lesson of each combined generation: children are satisfied with the simplest of toys.

Lotto's painting reveals many of the characteristics of his later paintings, including a fascination with the dramatic effects of light and shadow and what for his time was an original use of colors. An Italian, probably born in Venice about 1480, he never gained fame in his own time, overshadowed by the great master, Titian. In fact, when he tried to auction thirty paintings when he was seventy (and impoverished), he found buyers for only seven.

This eighth Christmas stamp depicts a Winter Sunday in Norway, Maine. Dating from 1870, the painting recalls an era when the sleigh was common transportation for goods and people in snow-bound areas. It was an era that made the song Jingle Bells, written by J.S. Pierpont in 1857, the first popular Christmas song by an American composer. "Dashing through the snow / In a one-horse open sleigh, / O'er the fields we go, / Laughing all the way," is how it began, and one can only speculate how many of the faithful on their way to Christmas services sang it exuberantly.

The 1968 6¢ Apollo 8 stamp was issued in tribute to the first orbital trip of men to the moon by U.S. Astronauts Borman, Lovell and Anders, which took place from December 21, 1968, until December 27, 1968, aboard the National Aeronautics and Space Adminisration vehicle Apollo 8.

One of my favorite "religious-themed stamps is that issued by the U.S.A. on 5th May 1969, which featured the spectacular "Earthrise" photograph, together with the words "In the beginning God..." which were read on Christmas Eve 1968 by the crew of Apollo 8 as they became the first human beings to orbit the moon.
The stamp had been designed by Leonard E. Buckley, and was printed in four colours, yellow and light blue by offset, and black and blue by Giori press. First day ceremonies were held at the Johnson Space centre in Houston, Texas, on the 5th May, the 8th Anniversary of Alan Shepard’s first American sub—orbital flight, with all three of the Apollo 8 astronauts present. The original Photograph, shown here, was rotated for the final stamp engraving.
The Mission itself had proved for the first time that man could escape the gravitational force of the earth and travel to other celestial bodies. But what a step it had been.

When talking to a potential supporter, you may want to say:

List as many potential supporters as you can before you begin approaching people for support. Consider family, friends, neighbors and other people whom you feel would be interested in your cause.

** Smile, be polite and most importantly, be enthusiastic about your cause.
** If possible, always carry your fundraising products or materials with you.
Helpful Tips to Maximize Your Fundraising Efforts
95% Fundraiser Project: Part Three
Step 1) Set Goals:
In fundraising, the first thing you need to do is set your goal.
How much do you want to raise? Or how much do you need to raise? What will you use the money for? When do you need the money by?
How much money does your group need to raise?
When do you need the money you are raising?
How many participants will be involved with your fundraiser?
When are you planning on starting the fundraiser?
Do you have a volunteer base to help with the fundraiser?
How important is the ease of administration?
Have you held fundraisers before? How would you rate their success?
Once you determine your fundraising goals, maximize your fundraising opportunity by telling EVERYONE about them! Tell your members. Tell your organization's officers. Tell your supporters. Tell the community. You'll generate more support and motivate your sellers.
Step 2) Choose a Fearless Leader...
When choosing a person to be the director of your fundraiser, look for a cheerleader.
Choose the person that's going to be excited about the products and prizes. A person who can motivate the members is going to be your #1 asset. Of course your leader should also be organized.
It does take time to keep the products and money organized, and Profit Potentials offers tools and advice to make it as easy as possible.
Step 3) Business Sense
Your fundraiser will go smoothly if you assign at least two people who are experienced and comfortable with handling money. Appoint one to serve as treasurer; the other as fundraising leader.
Both should be present when counting the money that has been collected. Both should sign all requests for money using a numbered receipt book for all cash disbursements. Accurate records of all money collected are necessary.
Deposit money in a timely manner-preferably daily. In between bank deposits, make arrangements to keep money under lock and key.
Profit Potentials gives your group free record keeping charts so you have an organized way of keeping track of all product distributed and money collected by each memeber.

Set your objective: The objective you set for your group should include a financial goal. It is always best if for fundraiser addresses a specific purpose. For example, your objective could be to raise $6,000 for playground equipment. Supporters are more likely to support a specific purposed fundraiser than one just raising money costs to the Annual Band Competition.
Set your deadline: We strongly suggest your fundraiser lasts a maximum of 1-3 weeks. We believe than fundraisers that last less than one week will not give participants adequate time and those longer than three weeks remove any sense of urgency.
Review your group's makeup: Think about how many of your group members will be participating in the fundraiser. It will help you organize a selling strategy.
Motivate the group: It is important to maintain close and constant contact with your group members, and to motivate and encourage them constantly. The most successful fundraisers are those in which the participants receive some direct benefit from the fundraiser. Benefits include not only the purpose of the fundraiser but also incentives to perform well in the fundraising effort.
Step 4) Managing your group's fundraiser
Delivery: Once you have placed your order, allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of additional DVDs.
Money collection: If you are holding a pre-sell or brochure fundraiser, participants should collect money when they take the order. If supporters want to pay for their merchandise with checks, make sure those checks are made payable to your group, not the Bible Stamp Club. For direct sales, your participants should collect the money when they give out the products.
Tallying and packing orders: It is a good idea to solicit volunteers in advance to help with these tasks. Appoint a chairperson to oversee and coordinate these activities. The chairperson and each participant should ALWAYS check and double-check orders for errors.
Step 5) Should I offer incentive prizes?
Do I offer incentive prizes: It is very important for fundraising participants to benefit from the fundraiser. You probably do not need to offer separate prizes for a group raising money for a trip or for tournament costs. However, larger church-wide type fundraisers usually benefit from prize incentives.
Best-seller prizes: Offer a DVD prize to the individual who raises the most money, or sells the most units.
Draw prizes: Every participant who sells a pre-determined minimum amount is entered into a drawing for cash prizes or other DVD merchandise.
Step 6) Here are some tips for your participants:

This is the seventh Christmas stamp of the United States. It reproduces a detail from the painting The Annuciation by Jan van Eyck (c.1390-1441). It is generally believed that van Eyck developed the use of linseed oil as a solvent for pigment (oil painting) rather than the egg tempra that had been used before. There is no doubt that he was the first artist to achieve a realistic rendering of interior space. The Annunciation is considered to be a masterpiece of Christian symbolism. Jan van Eyck often signed his paintings with the words "Done as well as I can." This stamp captures the radiance of his transparent oil glazes and his fine detail.

Purpose: The Angel with Trumpet design was chosen for the fourth United States stamp honoring the Christmas Season. This stamp was made available many weeks in advance of Christmas to promote the US Post Office "Mail Early" campaign. The painting of the weathervane is now part of the Index of American Design housed in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. This trumpeting angel in flight (c.1840) is a sample of thousands of weathervanes that were hammered, cast or whittled in early America, where they told the direction of the wind and facilitated some on-the-spot forecasting of the weather. Cocks were the most common on churches where they recalled Peter's eventual denial of Christ.

Purpose: The third US Christmas issue, four stamps of different designs, depicted traditional aspects of the Christmas Season. The stamps were unique in the sense that this issue was the first time the US Post Office has printed more than one stamp design on one sheet. In this case, each design appeared 25 times on each pane of 100, and each block of four stamps contained one of each variety se-tenant , the philatelic term meaning "joined together". By ancient tradition, mistletoe symbolized peace; in modern days, to step under it hung high is to invite a friendly kiss. Holly symbolized the thorns placed on Christ's head. The use of evergreens as trees and wreaths came to us from the forests of Germany. And the poinsettia is a traditional Christmas flower, but the red leaves are NOT part of the flower!

Purpose: The wreath and Christmas candles were chosen an a non-sectarian design for the first United States stamp honoring the Christmas Season. The test was very sucessful with the public. The unprecedented demand strained government printing facilities so that in despiration, off-sizes of paper were used, producing intentional in error, some sheets of 90 rather than 100 stamps.

America issued its first Christmas stamp in 1962 -- the 4¢ Wreath and Candles issue. Although the idea of a Christmas stamp was enormously popular, it was also very controversial. Critics claimed that the issuance of a Christmas stamp by the U.S. Post Office Department violated the constitutional separation of church and state. As a compromise, the wreath and candle were chosen as an appropriately secular design. First Day of Issue postmark of November 1, 1962, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Subject: Francis Scott Key Quotation - Issued to re-emphasize the ideals upon which America was founded and to honor those great Americans who wrote or uttered the credos. Credo is from the Latin verb meaning literally, "I believe." The basic design of the credo stamp series derives from the currency of the Revolutionary War period. Signatures used are facsimilies of the actual signatures of each individual honored, except for George Washington, which is stylized. The symbolic device used at the left represents stars and a bursting bomb within a circle. The fourth of the series honors Francis Scott Key's (1779-1843) exclamation, which is part of the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem, written during the British bombardment of Baltimore's Fort McHenry, Sept. 13-14, 1814.
