- Fueling the growth: Baby boomers moving into their 50s are contemplating, seeking, returning to churches.
- Revivals are cyclical – the last true revival was in the '60s and early '70s.
- Individuals in the Southeast and Midwest are more likely than those in other regions to state that religion is very important in their lives.
- Nearly all American adults (94%) say they believe in God or a universal spirit.
- More than four out of every five Americans (85%) call themselves
"Christian," and 40% of adults consider themselves "born-again."
- 72% of Americans believe "a great deal" or "somewhat" that their family relationships have been strengthened by religion.
- Almost three out of every four adults (71%) consider themselves to be "spiritual." More than four out of every five Americans (85%) call themselves "Christian," and almost as many (83%) say their religious faith is very important.
Retail Industry
The size of the Christian retail industry in total is estimated to be $3.75
billion; up from $2.6 billion in 1991.
- The Christian entertainment industry is estimated to be $3 billion. Christian music owns a 4.8% share of the market – country owns about 10% and is the industry's fastest-growing genre.
- Since 1980, Christian books sales have quadrupled – an industry now
estimated at $1 billion, which doesn't include Bibles.
- Religious card purchases are often planned and purchased at a location convenient to the consumer and that has suitable products.
Trends
Christian fiction has exploded in popularity in many Christian stores.
Christian music is seeing growth as a genre, jumping from 4.5 percent of the market share in 1997 ($549 million) to 6.3 percent in 1998 ($863 million), according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
VeggieTales, a sales phenomenon in 1998, has spurred growth in children's products and is becoming a staple.
The Christian Gift Consumer
Hallmark tends to group consumers into three very broad general categories, as identified by George Barna, a leading researcher in the Christian market:
- Christian Commitment (technically all three categories could be classified as believers) – those who believe in God, may not go to church consistently, or weekly, but attend at least on occasion and practice their religion less consistently. (49 million Americans; of these 21.2 million buy religious cards.)
- Born Again – those who have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ; their faith is a very important part of their life; they participate in church activities, pray and read the Bible (about 72 million Americans; of these, 36.1 million buy religious cards)
- Evangelical – those with the highest religious conviction, who feel compelled to share their faith with others so that they too may develop, strong faith and a personal relationship to Christ. (14 million Americans; of these, 7.7 million buy religious cards)
*The number of "born agains" has increased sharply over the past 20 years; some studies suggest they're the fastest growing segment of America's religious population.
